Who can be a member?

What are the benefits of membership?
- Policy development: A forum in which to develop and express common views relieves members of the need to grapple with these issues individually, and lends greater weight to the industry viewpoint. Strong product and policy expertise allow AFME to provide influential content into responses to regulators and policymakers’ consultations.
- Advocacy: Unparalleled access to a network of relationships with policymakers in key jurisdictions allows AFME to spot emerging issues and trends and to deliver results at the point of impact.
- Standardisation and best practice: The pursuit of standardisation through form documentation and recommended practice results in more efficient transactions and reduced costs.
- Networking: AFME encourages a free exchange of ideas among member firms to identify and work on matters of non-competitive mutual interest in developed and developing markets.
- Communications, education, and conferences: A strong media relations function helps the industry communicate its perspective and clear up misconceptions. Seminars and conferences provide a dual networking and educational function.
How do I become a member?
Please see Become a Member or call our membership department on +44 20 7743 9325. Applications are reviewed for eligibility and approved by a Board committee.
What are the criteria for membership?
AFME has two categories of membership - full and associate. To be eligible for full membership, your firm must be a financial institution such as a bank, corporate finance advisor or broker or other financial institution deemed appropriate by the AFME Board. All others are eligible for associate membership.
What is the right membership package for me?
Full members are automatically eligible (and encouraged) to participate in the full range of AFME activities. Associate members tend to have narrower or more focused interests, so we have tailored our membership options to allow them to choose between participating in activities under our Policy & Advocacy or Business Policy sections, or to opt for both.
How are subsidiaries of and business lines within the parent company of a member treated?
A group company that would meet the criteria for full membership if it were a separate entity will be eligible to participate under the parent company’s full membership. Group companies that do not meet the criteria are invited to apply to become associate members. A business line within a parent company that is a full member will be able to participate without applying for a separate associate membership, but on the same terms as an associate member.
What is the difference between Policy & Advocacy and Business Policy?
Our Policy & Advocacy activities address broad topics related to regulation of banks, investment firms, and the financial markets. The focus tends to be on analysing and responding to regulatory initiatives throughout Europe. Participants in this area also meet regularly to raise and discuss practical issues and to establish constructive relationships with policymakers.
Our Business Policy activities address commercial and market practice issues that arise in specific product areas and business lines. Participants in each division also meet regularly to raise and discuss practical issues. The focus tends to be on formulating best practice and market standards to create more efficient, liquid, and open markets.
The activities of these areas frequently overlap, and so the two sections work together closely. A chart showing the range of our activities and how we are organised is available here.
May associate members participate in all divisions, committees, and working groups?
Associate membership participation is at the discretion of individual divisions. Most welcome some level of associate member participation. More details are available by contacting us at membership@afme.eu or on +44 20 7743 9325.
Are associate members eligible to become AFME Directors?
Only full members are eligible for participation on the AFME Board of Directors.
What are your subscription rates?
Our subscription rates begin at £5,000 per annum, but vary according to the membership category (full or associate), the size of your firm, the scope of its operations, and the level of participation. We would be happy to provide you with a quote on the telephone.
What is your membership year?
Our membership year runs from 1 November through 31 October. If you join mid-year, we will pro-rate your subscription for the number of months remaining in that year.
May I cancel my membership?
You may cancel your membership by giving six months’ written notice to us at:
AFME / Membership Department
St. Michael’s House
One George Yard
London
EC3V 9DH.
Subscriptions are not refundable.
Will you post my publications on your website or distribute them to members?
Our main objective is to serve as a unified industry voice. Consequently, we rarely distribute materials that come from individual members. We occasionally make exceptions to this policy for material that furthers the objectives of the association. We encourage you to contact us if you would like us to consider posting (or linking to) something that would be of interest to our members.
Will AFME endorse products and services of full or associate members?
AFME does not endorse member products or services.
Will I be able to appear as a speaker at conferences and events?
Our members are experts in their fields, and so we draw on them frequently for panels and presentations. If you are interested in speaking at a conference or appearing on a panel, please contact the head of the particular division or our conference department about upcoming events. To learn about upcoming events, check our website, join our email list, and participate actively in divisions, committees, and working groups.
What is the Global Financial Markets Association?
AFME is a partner in a global alliance with the Asian Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (ASIFMA) and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) in the US. Each of these trade bodies is an independent, autonomous, self-funded, and self-governed entity that is a member of the GFMA. The GFMA unifies regional perspectives into a global voice and co-ordinates the activities of its members.
