Equities

About the Equities Division

The Equities Division monitors and analyses developments in policy and market structure that affect equities markets, engages constructively in shaping market structure and the policy environment, and pursues significant, measurable reductions in the frictional costs of trading. Equities Division initiatives are generated by the members, approved by the board, and carried out by AFME staff working with teams of experts from member firms. The projects take a variety of forms, from informal discussion groups to formal responses to government consultations.

Key Issues and Initiatives

  • European policy developments (including the review of equity market transparency, broker crossing networks and post-trade transparency);
  • Harmonisation of 'tick sizes' in Europe;
  • European post-trade architecture, including interoperability between clearing houses (this work is chiefly undertaken by the AFME Post-Trading Division);
  • Market data: quality, cost, and availability; and
  • Post-Lehman work, including the UK authorities' work on developing a resolution regime for investment banks.

Organisation

The division's board of directors is composed of the heads of equities at member firms. The board works with the AFME Securities Trading Committee, which is charged with developing and executing the policies of AFME in relation to the equities markets. It comprises business managers in the equity divisions of member firms.
